The Sacraments are a wonderful gift to us from God inviting us into deeper intimacy with Him. So that children can gain the full benefit of the experience, the preparation is vitally important. Unlike Baptism and Confirmation, Eucharist is a sacrament that can be received as often as one wants, and strengthens us with grace each time it is received. Candidates need to be Catholic, and have made their First Reconciliation prior to receiving their First Eucharist, and must be in year three or above.
In our Parishes, we have the Sacraments of both Reconciliation and Holy Communion when the child is in year three. They are still held as two separate sacraments, and are arranged approximately three months apart. When you register your child for Reconciliation we will assume you are also participating in Holy Communion other you advise otherwise.
First Holy Communion Preparation Program
The preparation will consist of four sessions to be attended by the enrolled candidates and a parent.
Saturday 25th May 2019
Saturday 1st June 2019
Saturday 15th June 2019
Friday 21st June 2019 (full day retreat)
If for any reason a child or parent is unable to attend a particular session, please let Lorraine know ahead of time so that alternate arrangements can be made. It’s essential that the candidates attend and complete the preparation prior to receiving the sacrament. Sunday Mass attendance is an important part of the program and is integrated into each session.
First Holy Communion Ceremony
The First Holy Communion Ceremony Mass takes approximately 1 hour and is followed by a group photograph with the priest. This Mass is a special celebration for the candidates and their families to share in. All are welcome.
Children are not required to buy special outfits for the Sacrament, however most girls will wear a white dress and most boys will wear dress pants and a long sleeve short. A general guide is how they would dress to attend a special occasion. Boys should wear long trousers and a shirt with a collar, no jeans, cargo pants or joggers. Girls should wear a dress, knee length or longer, and no midriffs or bare shoulders.
A copy of the child’s Baptism certificate is required as well as the permission of both parents. Please complete the attached registration form, or if you prefer, visit the parish office where your details will be entered for you.
The cost per child is $50 per candidate which covers both First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion and is payable at the time of enrolment either to the Parish house during office hours, or at the parent Information session, or online via EFT. No child will ever be denied the opportunity to receive the Sacraments due to financial limitations. Families in difficult financial circumstances should contact the parish office to discuss their situation confidentially.
